Smagua : The international benchmark for the water sector
10/05/10
The 19th SMAGUA event, the International Water and Irrigation Show, was held on 2nd to 5th March 2010 at the Exhibition Centre, in Zaragoza, the capital of Aragon (Spain). Over a surface area of 72,000 m2 the show brought together 1,554 exhibitors from 38 countries. More than 35,000 professionals visited the exhibition hall in the course of these 4 very hectic days. This year, there was an increase in the number of international visitors and exhibitors, with even more professionals coming from Europe, South Africa and the Middle East. SMAGUA is unrivalled in its field: today it is the only trade fair that incorporates all aspects of the water cycle: irrigation, treatment, purification, recycling and desalination. This 19th event has definitely increased SMAGUA’s reputation as an international benchmark in the water industry. We had the place of honour this year with the word “Irrigation” being added to the title of the trade show. The efforts put into the purely technical days deserve a special mention, as these are clearly very different from the promotional activities carried out by the exhibitors. SMAGUA 2010 was a very good shop window for the latest technologies in the different areas of the water sector, and this was the case, in particular, with our industry, where irrigation control technologies are constantly being developed. A number of manufacturers of irrigation products have received technical innovation awards for their products: Hunter for its novel Eco-Rotator, an economical and ecological solution that reduces water use. Vicente Canales S.A. received the new product award for their two FMA 6000 and FMA 7000 UV filters and the company Sistemes Electronic Progres received an award for its Agronomic 4000 programmer. We should also mention the very modern layout of the John Deere stand, which received the prize for best design and creativity.

Eloi Planes, Fluidra’s CEO, wins the 2009 entrepreneur of the year award.
10/05/10
Eloi Planes, Fluidra’s CEO, has received the 2009 Entrepreneur of the Year award, a prize organized by Ernst & Young, in partnership with IESE, BNP Paribas Fortis, Repsol and Negocio, a business newspaper. This award, which has great prestige and international reputation, recognises the excellence of the work and activities of entrepreneurs and businesses. The panels of judges, made up of prominent members of the world of business and economics, considered the applications of fifteen entrepreneurs and decided to award first prize to Eloi Planes, in recognition of his outstanding entrepreneurship, his sense of innovation and social commitment, and his excellent results achieved as head of the multinational group Fluidra. Eloi Planes explained how grateful and satisfied he was at receiving this award, saying: “the fact that I have been selected as the winner of this award from an outstanding group of entrepreneurs is not only a great honour for me, but also for Fluidra’s more than 3,000 employees, with whom I would like to share this prize”. Fluidra’s CEO director will be Spain’s representative at Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award ceremony, which will be held in Monte Carlo at the beginning of June, with the presence of winners from over 49 countries.

Barebo, Inc. celebrates its 30th anniversary
10/05/10
The industry’s leading manufacturer of aeration and fountain systems, Barebo Inc., celebrates the 30th anniversary of its incorporation. Purchased from Rodale Resources and incorporated in 1980 by Chuck & Terry Barebo, the Otterbine aerator was originally invented in 1952 by Dick Ott and was primarily used in the wastewater and aquaculture markets. With a commitment to the environment from the very beginning, and given the products natural ability to improve water quality in ponds and lakes, Chuck and Terry successfully pursued the product’s untapped potential in the golf, commercial and residential markets. The Barebo family tradition and commitment of providing superior products has become strengthened over the years as the second Barebo generation moved into the business; and the alliances created within the industry have allowed Otterbine to remain the industry leader for over two decades. This success has made the name Otterbine synonymous with water aeration equipment worldwide.

EMAGREF - EUROPEAN IRRIGATION ASSOCIATION
10/05/10
XV Anniversary of the European Association.
Scientific and technical days and conferences/Exhibitions.

Cemagref’s research and testing laboratory for irrigation equipment in Aix-en-Provence and the European Irrigation Association have jointly organised a conference on the theme “Irrigate while preserving the Environment.“ A large number of professional and scientific visitors were brought together over these three days, through the exhibition of equipment, conferences and debates on technical progress and developments currently taking place in the field of irrigation. A training programme for Agricultural Irrigation and Parks and Gardens enabling people to obtain EIA certification standards took place on 16th and 18th May of this year. As an opening to this show, the President of the European Irrigation Association and his board of directors provided a gala dinner to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the EIA. This event took place at the famous Les Deux Garçons café in Aix-en-Provence, with many important people from the world of irrigation attending this event. The President, Olivier Débart, in his welcoming speech, reminded us of the important activities carried out by the European Association in a number of fields, particularly in the area of standards, training and meetings with national and international government authorities. He also reminded us of the significant role played by the association in promoting new products that will manage water more efficiently, while preserving the environment. As far as the future objectives of the association are concerned, our President referred to the next water forum which will be held in Marseilles in 20112, where the EIA will have a major role to play. He also thanked all those men and women who have dedicated their time and energy to our profession. There was indeed a very pleasant atmosphere during this “irrigation” evening. We hope that this event can be repeated and continue in the interest of our profession and the preservation of the environment.

A founding partner and the driving force behind AFRE, commercial director and
co-founder of RKD Irrigación S.L., and representative of the Northern Commission of AFRE, passed away on 11th November 2009. The Spanish Association of Irrigation Manufacturers, AFRE, is honoured to pay a Special Tribute to the memory of Alfredo Callejón, which has take place on 2nd February 2010, at 1930 hours, in Madrid, in the Retiro Room of the Hotel Wellington (C/Velázquez 8). At a very early age he joined the historic Spanish irrigation company Humet, then moving on to Urariego in the eighties, where he carried out the duties of sales director. His interest in the development of new products led him to become a partner in the company REKDOR, the predecessor of RKD Irrigación, S.L., where his work as manager and sales director was a decisive factor in its international expansion, the products reaching the markets of more than thirty countries in four continents. He was one of the first partners of AGRAGEX, the Spanish Association of Agricultural Machinery, Irrigation and Livestock Equipment Manufacturers-Exporters, with a mission to advance the internationalization of Spanish products in our markets, and, as a co-founder of AFRE, he promoted the standardization of Spanish irrigation products. Alfredo Callejón was co-founder of RKD, a major company with experience in the field of irrigation since 1962. The technicians and managers of RKD Irrigación research, design, plan, manufacture and install the most suitable systems for crop irrigation, depending on the orography of the land, climate, soil type and plant requirements. RKD irrigación has been certified according to the standard ISO 901-2000 since 2003 accredited by BCQI and UKAS.
