Rainwater Harvesting: an Act of Eco-Citizenship that Brings Significant Rewards

The operation of a rainwater harvesting system for the garden and supplying the WC and washing facilities that do not require drinking water, is quite simple: Rainwater falling on the roof is channelled towards the gutter drain pipes which are connected to the tank.

What are the savings on water?
The price of water keeps going up, and our consumption as well. The average price per cubic metre has increased by 5% per annum in France over the last twenty years. 1 m3 of water will cost on average 5 € in 2011. Resources, on the other hand, are suffering from our lifestyles and they are gradually decreasing; in addition to this, inescapably, we have climate change which is going to bring even drier summers.
Within such a context, the 91% of French people who have a green space (61% have a garden and 41% a terrace) are looking up to the heavens with a renewed envy: if they only had the equipment capable of recovering this rainwater falling from above and use it to irrigate their lawn or gardens. Water, the original “Blue Gold”, is becoming scarcer, so we are looking for more intelligent ways of stocking up. Harvesting is an economical and ecological alternative to our hyper-consumption, because it does not seem right nowadays to use drinking water to wash the car or water the garden. Furthermore, we don’t need to use treated water for most of our daily requirements. Only 7% of the water we consume is used for drinking or cooking. A third disappears down the WC, 12 % goes into the washing machines, and 150 to 500 litres is used for a vegetable garden of 50 m²….
