For many years up until the beginning of the 20th Century, irrigation techniques remained unchanged, both in terms of the canal-type collective distribution networks in the form of canals delivering water to farms by the “water round” system, and the different gravity techniques used for irrigating the plot of land.

Technologically speaking, the emergence of a wide range of equipment improved water efficiency while the development of sprinkler techniques enabled irrigation to be extended to other land areas. In the 1950s, sprinkler-type irrigation became widespread with the introduction of portable lengths of irrigation pipes equipped with rotary sprinklers of medium pressure and medium range. These installations allowed for the introduction of a new distribution network, along pressurized pipes, with the advantage of water being distributed to each field.
